Colorimetry Assessment
LivingHope Vision Clinic is proud to offer cutting-edge vision care services, including Visual Stress and Colorimetry Assessments utilizing the innovative Intuitive Colorimeter™.
Do you struggle with reading, learning, attention, migraine, concussion or head injury, or experience visual discomfort and difficulties?
If yes, you may suffer from Visual Stress.
What is Visual Stress?
Visual Stress is a neurological condition. It’s a problem with the brain’s ability to process visual information such as light, flicker, patterns, contrast, glare, colour and movement.
This causes the visual parts of the brain to overreact and can lead to many signs and symptoms, such as:
-
Reading or learning difficulties
-
Attention difficulties
-
Behavioural issues
-
Headaches or migraines
-
Cognitive fatigue, pain, nausea
-
Visual discomfort and difficulties
-
Depth perception
-
Balance and coordination issues
-
Anxiety, depression
Many neurological conditions have symptoms that overlap with Visual Stress, making it difficult to distinguish the root cause. In many cases, Visual Stress co-exists with these neurological disorders or learning difficulties. Because visual triggers are often overlooked as a contributing factor, many individuals are not getting the symptom relief they could be receiving.
Examples of related conditions where Visual Stress is commonly seen include:
Neurodevelopmental disorders:
-
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD/ADHD)
-
Autism Spectrum Disorder
-
Sensory Processing Disorder
-
Tourette Syndrome
-
Specific Learning Difficulties such as:
-
Dyscalculia
-
Dysgraphia
-
Dyslexia
-
Dyspraxia
-
Neurological disorders:
-
Chronic Fatigue
-
Chronic post-trauma headache
-
Migraine
-
Photosensitive Epilepsy
-
Vestibular Disorders
-
PPPD - persistent dizziness
-
Anxiety and PTSD
-
Depression
Neurological injury or disease:
-
ABI - Concussion
-
Stroke
-
Whiplash
-
Multiple Sclerosis
-
Bacterial infection
-
Viral infection

What is the assessment process?Step 1: Comprehensive eye examination Before diving into the assessment, our Optometrists will conduct a thorough eye examination to rule out any underlying vision problems and determine the most accurate prescription for your lenses. If you have recently had an eye examination, let us know at the time of booking and we can instead schedule you for a brief consultation regarding Colorimetry with one of our Assessment Specialists. An optometrist should be consulted at least every two years, especially when vision problems are experienced! Step 2: Pre-screening test (FREE) Take the test at VisualStress.app. The pre-screening test is a discovery tool that gives you a better understanding of Visual Stress, your situation and the likelihood that you suffer and will benefit from a complete assessment. The system produces a report, provides resources to help address symptoms and elaborates on the next steps. Select LivingHope Vision as your clinic! Step 3: Visual Stress Assessment The Visual Stress Assessment includes several tests to establish the existence of Visual Stress and to identify the impact of colour. Independent tests for pattern sensitivity, perceptual distortions, and rate of reading improvement are performed to confirm the diagnosis of Visual Stress, identify visual triggers, and capture their perceptual distortions. During the assessment, visual environmental modifications and accommodations are identified and recommended, and a report is produced. Step 4: Intuitive Colorimeter Assessment™ The Intuitive Colorimeter™ is a medical instrument that systematically and independently samples hue (360 degrees of colour), saturation (50 degrees of saturation), and luminance (4 levels of brightness). This helps determine the precise colour to reduce sensitivities and difficulties related to Visual Stress. Step 5: Tint update Over time, you may experience changes in the effectiveness of your precision-tinted lenses. Your first reaction may be to stop wearing them, but this is not the solution. Your visual system changes over time just like your eyes do. Most people need to update their vision prescription every few years. The same goes for your precision tint. A tint update is usually required when: - Your prescription changes; - Your brain chemistry changes (e.g. puberty, pregnancy, menopause, medications or other); - Healing after an accident (e.g. concussion, TBI, etc.); - When the visual environment becomes more tolerable; or - When the tint fades over time, from exposure to UV light, or lens cleaning. This is a natural process that occurs with lens tints but often goes unnoticed since the tint lightens as you become more tolerant to the visual triggers. IMPORTANT: Only use a mild dish soap and lukewarm water with a clean microfiber cloth to wash your lenses. Never use chemicals or any lens spray or cleaners containing alcohol based solutions.

Options for wearing the precision tinted lensesOnce we've identified the exact wavelengths of your ideal colour filter, your precision tinted lenses will be ordered. The lenses are produced using specialized medical tints that match the results you had during your assessment with the Intuitive Colorimeter™. These lenses have a smooth transmission curve and will help reduce discomfort from harsh lights or screens, improve tolerance to your visual triggers, improve the efficiency with which you can complete visual tasks, and improve your overall quality of life. Precision tinted lenses can be ordered with or without prescriptions: - Plano (no prescription) - Single vision reading - Single vision distance - Lined bifocal - Progressive - Prism or - Contact lenses Options for wearing the lenses include the following: 1) Regular ophthalmic frames 2) Custom clip-ons 3) Fit-over frames 4) Specialized contact lenses

Are precision tinted lenses suitable for children?Yes! Precision tinted lenses are suitable for individuals of all ages, including children. In fact, early intervention through this technique can greatly assist children experiencing visual discomfort, light sensitivity or reading difficulties, helping them overcome challenges and achieve academic success. If you suspect that you or your child may be experiencing visual stress, our team at LivingHope Vision Clinic is happy to help and provide a comprehensive assessment tailored to your specific needs.
-
How long does it take to notice improvements? While individual experiences may vary, most patients report significant improvements in various areas almost immediately and during the in-clinic assessment. This is evidenced with the following tests: 1) Rate of reading 2) Pattern sensitivity 3) Pattern distortion After wearing the precision tinted lenses identified through the assessment, your visual system will continue to adapt to the specific colour filter and you may notice continuous enhancements in your experience over time. Since your brains and eyes change over time, you will require a tint re-evaluation every few years to ensure that your customized tint remains optimal.

Is insurance coverage available?Yes! However, coverage can vary depending on your insurance provider and plan. We recommend contacting your insurance provider to find out about your specific plan's coverage. Our team at LivingHope Vision Clinic is always available to assist and provide any necessary information to help you make the most of your vision care benefits. In Ontario, we've had positive outcomes for insurance coverage for post-concussion rehabilitation from the following providers: 1) Motor Vehicle Accident - Health Claims for Auto Insurance (HCAI) 2) Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB Ontario) 3) Canada Life 4) Some employers such as the government of Canada.
