January marks Glaucoma Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating the public about this often-silent eye disease that can lead to permanent vision loss. Known as the "silent thief of sight," glaucoma damages the optic nerve, usually without noticeable symptoms in its early stages. According to the World Health Organization, it is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide.


Understanding Glaucoma and Its Risks


Glaucoma primarily affects people over 40, especially those with a family history of the disease. People of African, Asian, and Hispanic descent are also at a higher risk, as are individuals with high blood pressure, diabetes, or severe nearsightedness. Regular eye exams are crucial, as early detection can slow or prevent further damage.

While there's currently NO CURE for glaucoma, there are several effective treatments to manage and control it. Treatment options vary depending on the type and severity of glaucoma:
