Age-Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD) is a common eye condition that affects people as they grow older. Over time, it can lead to loss of central vision, leaving only peripheral (side) vision intact.

What is ARMD?

ARMD occurs when the macula becomes damaged. The macula is a small but critical area of the retina, located at the back of the eye. It helps you see fine details clearly. When the macula deteriorates, the central part of your vision becomes blurry or develops dark spots, making everyday activities challenging.

There are two main types of ARMD:

Can ARMD Be Treated?

While there’s no cure for ARMD, early detection and treatment can help slow its progression:

  • For dry ARMD:

    • Healthy lifestyle changes, like eating a diet rich in leafy greens and fish.

    • Taking special vitamin supplements (AREDS2) may help protect your vision.

  • For wet ARMD:

    • Treatments like anti-VEGF injections can stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels.

    • Laser therapy may also be used in some cases.

If you’re over 50 or have a family history of ARMD, it’s essential to get yearly eye exams.

Early detection of ARMD gives you the best chance to preserve your vision.
